Good to know
The 104.9% representative APR is high because the £250 annual fee is spread over an assumed £1,200 limit; it reflects the fee, not the interest rate.

18 cards. Each figure was read from the issuer’s own page on the date shown on its card. Lender names and logos are trademarks of their respective owners, shown only to identify each issuer. No endorsement or commercial relationship.

Not included, and why. Bank of Scotland (its page returned an error to automated reads), Zempler Bank (its page says applications are closed), Funding Circle FlexiPay (priced as a flat fee per use, with no APR to compare), Payhawk (corporate cards, no published terms), Soldo (prepaid, not credit) and Tide (a referral to Capital on Tap, already listed). We list a card only when its own page publishes terms.

How to compare business credit cards

There is no best card, only the card whose terms fit how your business spends and repays. Work through these in order. We rank nobody and award no stars.

1. Will you clear it each month?

If you will, the interest rate barely matters and the annual fee, foreign fee and rewards decide the cost. If you will carry a balance, compare the purchase rate, not the headline cashback.

2. Add up the fees you will trigger

Annual fee per card, foreign transaction fee if you buy abroad, cash fee if you withdraw, late fee if you slip. A representative APR includes only compulsory fees.

3. Check you can apply

Many bank cards need that bank’s business account; some need a minimum trading history or turnover; some are limited-company only. The eligibility line on each card says which.

4. Read the guarantee line

A limited company may be asked for a personal guarantee. The card details show what each issuer says, or that it says nothing.

5. Test the rewards

Cashback often has a monthly spend threshold, a category limit or a time limit. Work out what you would really earn before it offsets a fee.

6. Ask what the check does to your file

Some issuers use a soft search at application. Others do not say. See our credit score guide.

Charge card vs credit card

Four of the cards above are charge cards. The difference is whether you can carry a balance.

What a representative APR means for a card

Three numbers on a card page answer three different questions. Read our full guide to business credit card APR.

Representative APR

A standardised yearly figure that blends the interest rate and compulsory fees on an assumed credit limit, usually £1,200. At least 51% of accepted applicants must get it or better. It is not a quote.

Purchase rate

The yearly interest rate on what you buy, charged if you do not clear the balance in time. It is what carrying a balance actually costs.

Interest-free days

The longest gap before interest starts on purchases, only if you pay the whole statement by the due date. A maximum, not a guarantee, and not for cash withdrawals.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a business credit card and a charge card?

A credit card lets you carry a balance from month to month and pay interest on it, with a minimum payment. A charge card has no revolving balance: the whole statement is due by the payment date, so it carries no revolving purchase rate. Both can give an interest-free period if you pay in full. 4 of the 18 cards here are charge cards.

What does a representative APR mean on a business credit card?

It is a standardised figure that folds the interest rate and compulsory fees, such as an annual fee, into one yearly rate on stated assumptions, usually a £1,200 credit limit. It is the rate at least 51% of accepted applicants must receive, so it is not a rate you are promised. Fee-heavy cards show very high representative APRs on that small assumed limit.

Which business credit cards have no annual fee?

On the issuers' own pages: Capital on Tap Business Credit Card (Free plan), Barclaycard Select Cashback business credit card, Metro Bank Business Credit Card, Funding Circle Cashback business credit card.

Do I need a personal guarantee?

It depends on the issuer and the type of business. Santander says it asks limited companies and LLPs but not sole traders or partnerships; Lloyds says one may be needed for limited companies and LLPs; Capital on Tap says its card requires one. Many product pages say nothing. Read our guide to personal guarantees and ask the issuer before you apply.

Can a sole trader get a business credit card?

Some issuers say so: American Express, Lloyds Bank, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland, Santander state that sole traders can apply. Capital on Tap, American Express Gold and Platinum and the Funding Circle cashback card are for limited companies or LLPs.

Does a business credit card affect my personal credit score?

Usually not directly, according to issuers that comment, but the application search, a personal guarantee that is called, and sole-trader accounts are the exceptions. See our guide for what each issuer says.

Do you earn commission or take applications?

We do not take applications, and no issuer pays to be listed, moved or reworded. Domain Farm Ltd, which publishes the site, may be paid a fee by a broker if you ask to be introduced through Find a lender. Each card links to the issuer's own page.
