Business credit cards and your personal credit score

The answer is usually “not directly, but”. The “but” is the credit check at application and any personal guarantee, and the issuers do not all say the same thing.

What we can and cannot cite

We looked for a statement from Experian, Equifax or TransUnion on how UK business card accounts appear on a personal credit file, and did not find one published on their own pages. So this guide does not cite a credit reference agency on that point, and it does not claim a rule the agencies have not published. It sticks to what the issuers and one UK lender’s published guide say about their own processes, and it tells you how to check your own position.

At application: soft search or hard search

The credit check at application is where a business card most clearly touches your personal file. Issuers differ in what they say. Capital on Tap states that it runs a soft search on your personal credit file when you apply, so applying does not affect your score, and that it runs a hard search on your business’s credit file only once you sign the credit agreement, which is when it becomes visible to other lenders. NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland each say they carry out a soft credit check based on the details you enter, and a soft search on your personal credit file, which will not affect your credit score and, in their words, is something you will see on your file but other lenders will not. Funding Circle says limited companies can check their credit limit without affecting their credit score. By contrast, Santander says “a full credit check will be made on application”, Lloyds says it will carry out a credit check on you and your business, HSBC says the card is subject to a credit check, and the Co-operative Bank says it carries out a credit search to set your limit. Santander, Lloyds, HSBC and the Co-operative Bank do not say on the product pages whether that search is soft or hard, so ask before you apply. A hard search is recorded on a file and visible to other lenders; a soft search is not.

Where the personal guarantee comes in

Funding Circle’s published guide, dated 7 July 2026, says a business credit card does not usually affect your personal credit score directly, because UK business cards usually report to your business credit file. It names the exceptions: the application, a personal guarantee, and serious arrears or default. On guarantees it says that signing one does not affect your personal score by itself, but that if the business defaults and the personal payments that follow are missed, that can show on your personal file. Capital on Tap’s FAQ says the same in substance: business cards do not usually appear on your personal credit report, but because many require a personal guarantee, a default could affect your personal score. These are the issuers’ own statements about their own practice, not a rule that covers every card, and Funding Circle is also an issuer with an interest in how cards are perceived, so treat the general claims with care. What each card page says about guarantees is in our guide to personal guarantees.

Sole traders are different

If you trade as a sole trader, you and the business are the same legal person, and a card in your trading name is plainly a debt of yours. How it is reported depends on the issuer and the product. NatWest and Royal Bank of Scotland publish separate terms for sole traders and partnerships. We found no issuer statement on how a sole trader’s card is reported, so ask the issuer rather than assume.

How to find out what actually happens

  1. Ask the issuer two questions before you apply: is the application search soft or hard, and which credit reference agencies do you report the account to, personal or business?
  2. Look at your own files. You can see your personal credit report with each of the main agencies, Experian, Equifax and TransUnion, and check a month after opening a card whether it appears.
  3. Limit the number of applications. Capital on Tap notes that a hard search becomes visible to other lenders, so use an eligibility check where one is offered rather than applying to several issuers at once.
  4. Pay on time. Most card problems start with missed payments, which can follow you through a guarantee. A Direct Debit for at least the minimum is the simplest protection.

The practical summary

Capital on Tap and Funding Circle both describe day-to-day spending and repayment on a business card as sitting on the business’s file, not yours; other issuers say nothing on the point. Your personal file is at risk in three places: the application search, a personal guarantee that is called, and the case of a sole trader whose business is the individual. Before you apply, work out which of those apply to you, and use the issuers’ published eligibility pages to avoid wasted applications. If you are a newer business, the eligibility guide for new businesses and weaker credit sets out what each issuer states. For the cards themselves, see the comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Does applying for a business credit card affect my personal credit score?

It can, depending on the issuer's search. Capital on Tap, NatWest, Royal Bank of Scotland and Funding Circle describe soft checks that do not affect your score at application. Others do not say on the product page whether the search is soft or hard.

Do business credit cards show on my personal credit report?

Capital on Tap and Funding Circle both say they usually do not, with exceptions such as a personal guarantee that is called after a default. We could not find a credit reference agency statement on it.

What if I have signed a personal guarantee?

Funding Circle says signing one does not affect your score by itself, but missed personal payments after a business default can show on your personal file.

How can I check?

Ask the issuer which agencies it reports to, then look at your personal credit report with Experian, Equifax and TransUnion a month after opening the card.
